Over $250,000 lost in string of scams, extortions in southeast Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Gage County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a rash of scams that were reported over the last week.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said people have lost several thousands of dollars in the scam, fraud and extortion cases.
In one instance, a victim lost over $250,000.
The sheriff’s office said all of the victims were tricked into sending an unknown person large amounts of cash or electronic money transfers.
All of the victims were either threatened with arrest or blackmailed.
The sheriff’s office said the community should be cautious when sending money to unknown people.
People should also be aware of “red flags,” which include demands for secrecy and urgency. Another sign of trouble is being told that you won a prize or owe a debt that you have no knowledge of.
“Do not succumb to pressure or demands for secrecy,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “Call a family member, financial advisor, or law enforcement and ask to speak to someone immediately.”
