Woman living in house that had infected cats cited by Animal Control

Lincoln Animal Control has cited a woman living in a house which 31 cats were removed from last week, some of which tested positive for contagious disease.

Animal Control Manager Steve Beal said the cats, which were taken from a home near 33rd and St. Paul Avenue, tested positive for feline panleukopenia, a highly contagious viral disease. All of the cats eventually had to be put down.

Beal said Monday the woman received citations for neglect, not having rabies vaccinations, not having a license, having more than five cats in a home, and sanitation violations. He said it is up to the city attorney’s office to decide how many charges the owner could face.

Each citation brings the possibility of a $100 fine. None of the citations include jail time, Beal said.

Beal said if the cats had received proper vaccines, there is a good the chance the situation could have been prevented.

“Get your cats vaccinated,” he said.

Beal said his office responds to two or three ‘hoarding’ cases like this each year.
