Palmyra Schools shares its passionate plea to prevent more tragedies on Highway 2
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Palmyra Schools is sharing its emotional plea to improve a dangerous stretch of road in southeast Nebraska.
This comes after the Nebraska Department of Transportation temporarily lowered the speed limit along a section of Highway 2 in Otoe County.
Superintendent Michael Hart said people were concerned about the area long before he was hired in 2020.
He said during his relatively short time on the job, he’s heard from many community members who’ve been impacted by crashes near Palmyra.
Hart’s letter to NDOT goes on to say he’s also witnessed the pain of students and colleagues whose loved ones have been seriously injured or killed.
“This grief is amplified by the frustration and anxiety experienced by many local leaders and citizens who (in the past) have oftentimes felt ‘shut out’ or not actively heard by governmental agencies, state officials, and transportation department leaders,” the superintendent wrote.

The speed limit in the area has been reduced from 70 mph to 55 mph as NDOT evaluates the area.
