Interstate 80 in central Nebraska shut down due to whiteout conditions

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – State officials have shut down a part of Interstate 80 amid a winter storm in Nebraska.

As of midnight Tuesday, I-80 is closed in both directions between Grand Island and Lexington due to whiteout conditions.

The eastbound lanes are closed from North Platte to Lexington.

It’s unknown when the road will reopen.

“Please park and wait out these dangerous weather conditions,” the Nebraska State Patrol said on social media.

Earlier on Monday, westbound I-80 near Lexington was closed due to “numerous crashes,” officials said.

The patrol shared a photo of a jack-knifed semitrailer on I-80 near Lexington.

In a Facebook post, the patrol said troopers responded to about 50 weather-related incidents as of 1:15 p.m.
