Partly cloudy on Sunday, before active weather arrives in the evening

The daytime hours on Sunday will leave many with a mix of sun and clouds. On Sunday evening the snow starts up for north and central Nebraska, while SE sees first rain, a mix, then snow. Monday AM/PM and Tuesday AM commutes are likely to be impacted from blowing snow and slick roads.

The Winter Storm Watch that is in place from 9:00pm on Sunday until 6:00am on Tuesday includes most eastern counties and has extended to parts of central.

Various models are in agreement on the general timing of snow. Central and northern Nebraska will see snow first Sunday evening, the SE will see first rain. The rain in SE Nebraska will turn into a mix, before transitioning into snow Monday morning /early afternoon. Snow will continue overnight into Tuesday morning, before shifting east into Iowa before noon.

Totals are still being updated as the winter system approaches, however as of Saturday evening we are forecasting the higher amounts to reach 4-6+ inches. Some areas in the 4-6+ have an isolated chance and may see 7-8″.

Depending on if SE Nebraska sees more rain first we could see less snow and vise versa more rain then we will see less snow. The channel 8 Storm Alert Team is continuing to monitor and provide updates on the winter storm.

Looking ahead, Monday’s winter storm is not our only chance for snow in the future, with smaller chances later in the week. Along with smaller chances for snow, comes cold temperatures. There is a high probability that between January 12-16 we will see below normal temperatures, with lows dipping into the negatives. Bitter wind chills of -25 to -35 are possible next Friday and Saturday.
