LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A pelican that was shot dozens of times and trapped in fishing line has healed, according to Nebraska Wildlife Rehab.
Officials say the recovery process took weeks of surgical procedures and bandage changes. The pelican also developed multiple infections.
But now he’s back in the wild and NWR is sharing photos of him flying free this summer.
The nonprofit is also once again asking people to pick up any fishing line you see visiting lakes, to help prevent future injuries.
It receives dozens of birds and turtles every year that have been tangled up, and even impaled by hooks.
