People get out to enjoy Labor Day

Whether it’s taking the kids out for some fun or simply spending time at the mall, Labor Day gives people the chance to enjoy a little more time away from work.

One popular spot for parents to take their kids was interactive fun park Defy Gravity.

"They’re kind of dragging because, you know, they’re tired of school already," Sheila Thigman said.  "And so I decided it would be important to get out and do something fun that didn’t have to do with sports or school."

Others felt their kids could continue to learn while having fun at the Lincoln Children’s Museum.

"We were looking for something…that we could all do to spend together," Brian Thimm said.  "We don’t come here as often as we’d like, so we just decided to come down for the day."

And some spent part of the day getting some good Labor Day bargains.

"Scheels has a moving sale," Andres Diaz-DeBose said.  "There’s a couple good sales out for just small things, shoes, sweatshirts, anything like that."

Many said that’s what labor day is about: honoring those who work throughout the week by giving them a day to do what they like, with the people they love.

"To give back from all the hard work that people give day–by–day," Diaz-DeBose said.  "Just a little ‘thank you’ for everything."

"Whether their jobs are 9 to 5 or longer, they don’t get to spend as much time with their families," Thimm said.  "Then this is a day off to make sure that they have to be with the people they love and care about."

And as a testament to how many people got out Monday: Defy Gravity said they were busier today than at any time in the last week; and the Lincoln Children’s Museum said they had already had almost 1,000 visitors by the afternoon.
