People walk a mile — some in their socks — for Lincoln shoe drive

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Wednesday was the annual Day Without Shoes, a fundraiser for the People’s City Mission.

This is a campaign to collect shoe donations for homeless people and others in need.

There are 138 businesses and organizations that support the event and serve as collection sites.

People met Wednesday at one of those sites, the Cornhusker Bank on 84th and O streets, as a starting point for an awareness walk.

This walk was a little over a mile, and some people even did it without shoes on, including Pastor Tom Barber, the CEO of the mission.

The exact amount collected this year is still undetermined, but it’s in the tens of thousands.

This is the 14th year of the event, and over the years, $110,000 and 284,000 pairs of shoes have been raised.
