Pepe’s Bistro sells out during fundraiser for people displaced by fire in downtown Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — After a devastating fire tore through an apartment building in downtown Lincoln, many were left without a place to call home.

But Pepe Fierro wasn’t going to let them rebuild alone.

“You go into the community to do your part, not to change it, but to do your part,” he said. “At that point, the community will change you.”

Pepe’s Bistro is hosting three fundraisers; the first was on Sunday.

The restaurant offered a select menu, with all of the proceeds from both food and art sales going toward two of those who lost their home the fire.

After spreading the word, the community did not disappoint.

“We’ve just about sold out,” Fierro said. “It’s been a great turnout of the community, which that’s why I love this community. Everybody is always there to help. We’ve got two of the tenants who were evicted by the fire. They’re actually here volunteering. They asked if they can help in some way. That’s just how it works; we can all do our little part.”

Because of the amount of money raised through the fundraiser and on GoFundMe, Fierro said they no longer need to host the other two events.

“The other folks are pretty much set; they have GoFundMe’s,” he said. “So, we’re going to focus on Rick and Mohammed. This will be the only fundraiser we have for that because everybody else is doing great.”

Going forward, Fierro said he plans to be there in any way possible for those that need it, and he knows the Lincoln community will always show up.

“Everybody, just keep showing up for each other, there’s never such a thing as doing too little,” he said. “Every little bit counts. Everything matters.”
