Periodic storm chances coming up
Severe Weather Awareness Week continues Wednesday with preparedness. A great resource to make sure you are prepared for severe weather can be found here.
Nebraska’s statewide tornado drill will happen (Wednesday, March 26) at 10 a.m. this morning. It’s the best time to ensure everyone knows where to take shelter at work, school and home!
We’ve had a nice stretch of weather so far this week with temperatures right around the upper 60s. That continues today, with warmer weather for western Nebraska.
We’ll see a bump in temperatures for Thursday and Friday here at home. Highs will be in the lower 80s first on Thursday with some thunderstorms firing nearby, but mainly south and east.
Here’s a look at the latest version of Stormcast with the timing of a chance for storms first east toward Omaha in the morning, then southeast Thursday night toward Kansas and Missouri.
Southeast Nebraska (starting near Aurora and extending east) is included in a Marginal risk for storms threatening up to 60 mph gusts and quarter-sized hail Thursday. The chance to see severe storms though is overall pretty low.
A better chance for storms comes from a cold front advancing on central Nebraska Friday night. Storms fire up along that front after about 7-8 p.m. and move east into the overnight hours.
A Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk for Friday night’s storms covers North Platte toward Lincoln and eastern Nebraska with the main threat of hail up to a quarter size.
Thursday and Friday are only the beginning of a more active pattern that lasts through the weekend.
More widespread rain looks likely by Saturday into Sunday, with a transition over to a messy wintry mix with some snow through Sunday night.
Accumulations look very minor with this late season round of snow, but we’ll have more of a picture as to how this pans out as we get closer to the weekend.
