Woman taken to Lincoln funeral home while still alive

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A woman was taken to a Lincoln funeral home Monday — but she wasn’t dead.

About 9:45 a.m., a 74-year-old woman on hospice was pronounced dead at Mulberry Nursing Home in Waverly, authorities said.

Her death certificate was signed by her doctor, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Employees of Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln took the woman to the mortuary.

About 11:45 a.m., an employee laid the woman on a table to “start their process,” Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said.

But the employee noticed that she was breathing, Houchin said, and immediately called 911.

When crews arrived, a funeral home staff member was performing CPR, according to Lincoln Fire & Rescue.

LFR took over CPR and took the woman to a hospital.

She was still alive as of 3:15 p.m., Houchin said.

“This is a very unusual case,” he said. “Been doing this 31 years, and nothing like this has ever gotten to this point before.”

Houchin said so far, deputies have not found that there was any criminal wrongdoing.

He said the nursing home wasn’t required to report the woman’s apparent death to the sheriff’s office. That’s because the death was expected and a doctor signed the certificate.

“I’m sure the nursing home’s and everybody’s going to be taking a look into what has happened,” Houchin said. “And I’m sure they’ll look and see if new protocols need to be made or if they were all followed.”
