Picking up the pieces: Crete neighborhood sticking together through turmoil

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) – A Crete neighborhood is picking up the pieces after their sense of peace was shattered by gunfire on Friday.

Now, they’re lifting each other up as the healing process begins.

“It’s really important because its traumatic, what happened to the family,” said neighbor Marlene Perez. “We should be united with them to support them and tell them, ‘you guys are not alone.'”

Marlene and her family have lived in this Crete neighborhood for 17 years.

She is just two doors down from the family that was shot by another neighbor.

Marlene said she was home when the shooting began, and she had almost gone outside, but something told her not to.

“It did hit me hard because as you can see, I have a two-month-old son,” said Marlene. “That could have been me and my son, and I’m glad the kids are OK because it could have been worse.”

Two days later, the community is starting to come together and heal.

Neighbors are bringing water and food to the victims.

“Just going to check on them when I can to tell them if they need anything,” Marlene said. “Tell the kids ‘you guys are safe now, there is no danger now that he is gone. He’s not going to do any harm to you anymore.'”

Marlene said this has taught her that the neighborhood needs to stick together always, not just in the hard times.

“Cherish every moment with your family and talk to your neighbors, get to know them,” Marlene said. “Tell them you’re there no matter what for them.”
