Pillen picks central Nebraska farmer for empty legislative seat
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A central Nebraska farmer is headed to the Legislature.
Gov. Jim Pillen appointed Fred Meyer to the seat for District 41 on Wednesday.
“Fred has strong community ties and possesses a public servant mentality,” Pillen said. “He has held positions on many ag and economic development groups.”
Meyer is filling the seat left vacant by Tom Briese, who became the state treasurer in September.
The new senator won’t serve long. He will finish Briese’s term but doesn’t plan to run for election in 2024.
“Sen. Briese has done excellent work representing District 41 for the past seven years. In particular, his advocacy for property tax relief,” Meyer said. “I am humbled that Gov. Pillen appointed me for this role, and I look forward to serving in the Legislature.”
District 41 encompasses all of Wheeler, Boone, Valley, Greeley, Sherman and Howard counties, plus parts of Hall and Buffalo counties.
Meyer was born and raised near West Point and earned degrees in animal science and agriculture education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He currently farms near St. Paul. He and his wife, Kay, have three sons and seven grandchildren.
