Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird released a statement Saturday regarding domestic violence in Lincoln:

“Lincoln is mourning another tragic loss caused by domestic violence. Like you, I’m heartbroken that we have lost one of our neighbors and incredibly concerned that this is one of four fatalities resulting from domestic violence that our community has experienced this year.

As a community, we must continue to work together to prevent violence and protect our neighbors.  In Lincoln, we are fortunate to have dedicated partners who stand ready with resources to help those experiencing domestic violence escape its grip.

One of these partners is Voices of Hope. Voices of Hope trained staff and volunteers offer 24-hour crisis intervention services. Through their telephone hotline at 402-475-7273 and through in-person, walk-in services, they provide assistance with safety planning, protection orders, financial resources, legal advocacy, and more.

Another partner is Friendship Home. Friendship Home also provides 24-hour support through its crisis line at 402-437-9302 and offers safe, confidential shelter and advocacy for survivors and their children.

If you or someone you know is affected by domestic violence, please reach out to one of these organizations. If you are looking for additional ways to help, please consider supporting these local nonprofits that provide lifesaving services to our neighbors.

While these organizations provide critical services to those in crisis, the City of Lincoln also works every day to put an end to domestic violence in our community. Our Lincoln Police Department employs a dedicated Domestic Violence Coordinator who reviews every domestic-related call, assesses risk, and connects survivors with support. This investigator collaborates closely with community organizations and provides training to officers to strengthen our collective response.

LPD also operates a Victim Assistance Unit, a civilian team that serves victims of all types of crime. They perform outreach and advocacy, help victims obtain protection orders, and serve as a bridge between victims, law enforcement, and the courts.

Together, with our community partners and law enforcement, we can help save lives, protect survivors, and work toward a future free from domestic violence.”
