LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Omaha Police Department on Wednesday wrapped up its internal affairs investigation into an officer who fatally shot a man.

Chief Todd Schmaderer said Officer Adam Vail violated OPD’s policies and training and recommended that he be fired.

On Aug. 28, several law enforcement officers were serving a search warrant near 78th Street and Sorenson Parkway.

Vail shot the subject of the warrant, 37-year-old Cameron Ford.

Ford was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said earlier this month that he would not file criminal charges against Vail.

But under Nebraska law, Vail’s death will be investigated by a grand jury.

Schmaderer said the internal affairs investigation had a lower threshold to meet than a criminal probe.

“During the course of the investigation, I did not see or uncover any criminal intent on the part of Officer Vail,” Schmaderer said in a press release. “Nonetheless, I cannot ignore my determination that police and procedure violations occurred.”

The police chief said Vail has the right to a hearing with the human resources director before his termination is approved.
