Police identify man killed in downtown Lincoln shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man shot and killed early Sunday morning in downtown Lincoln has been identified.

Assistant Police Chief Jason Stille said 24-year-old Saiveon Hopkins was shot in the chest near 11th and P streets around 1:30 a.m.

He was taken to a hospital, where he died a few hours later.  Another victim of the shooting has non-life-threatening injuries.

Stille said investigators are trying to piece together exactly what led up to the shooting, but they think it stemmed from a fight outside a bar in the area.  It’s unknown what led up to that fight.

Officers were in the area handling a “variety of disturbances” when the shooting happened.  Investigators think the shooting is not related to the football game on Saturday.

Anyone with information or video of the shooting is asked to call police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
