Police identify officers involved in shooting at Lincoln Bus Depot

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Police on Friday identified the officers involved in a shooting at the Lincoln Bus Depot.

Simon Kafka, 27, was refusing to get off a bus at the depot near 52nd and Superior streets around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived, police said Kafka began fighting with them.

Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow said Friday that Kafka stabbed Officer Kirby Urbanek in the neck and reached for his firearm.

Officer Kate Schwenke then fired her gun, hitting Kafka once.

Kafka was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

He has since been released and charged with attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault on an officer and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

His bond was set Friday at $1 million. He would need to pay 10% of that to be released.

His next court hearing is Dec. 1.

Urbanek has also been released from the hospital.

It was an eventful week for Schwenke.

On Wednesday night, she was injured while helping a driver involved in a crash southeast of Lincoln.

Schwenke and Officer Brent Lovett witnessed the crash near 158th Street and Saltillo Road.  Both were off-duty at the time.

Lovett and Schwenke went to help the driver of a Toyota.

A Chevy Bolt then struck the Toyota head-on, injuring the off-duty officers and the driver.

Lovett and Schwenke were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.  Schwenke has since been released.
