Police officers save life of teenager attempting to jump off a Lincoln bridge

The Lincoln Police Department is commending its officers after two saved the life of a 15-year-old boy they said was attempting to jump off a bridge near Highway 77 and West A street.

Officer Angela Sands said a passerby called 911 Monday afternoon after seeing the teen climb the fence to the top of the bridge and put one leg over, as if he was about to jump off.

When the first officer arrived they tried to talk the teen off the bridge, but it wasn’t successful, and the teen continued sliding down the side of the bridge Sands said.

At that point the teen’s concerned family members started arriving.

At that point a second officer was able to grab the teen from the other side. Both officers were able to pull him back over the wall and and move him to safety.

He was reunited with his family and taken to get mental health treatment.

Sands is recognizing both the passerby who saw a concern and reported it and the officers who remained calm and worked together to save this boy’s life.

“In law enforcement it’s not uncommon for us to deal with this kind of circumstance and its just one of the many rewarding parts of the job where you can see someone on their worst day or in a tragic situation and because of the officers they will get another day, or another chance to go on,” Sands said.
