LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Police have hit a dead end in their investigation into a Fourth of July assault.

A Lincoln Police Department spokeswoman said Thursday that “despite a thorough investigation,” investigators have exhausted all leads but don’t have any suspects.

On the night of July 4, someone in a pickup truck fired an artillery shell into a group of people in a driveway in northwest Lincoln, according to police.

The group responded by chasing a 12-year-old child “in error,” police said. Investigators do not think the child was involved in the fireworks incident.

After catching up to the 12-year-old, someone assaulted them, LPD said.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and looked at video evidence to try to identify those involved.

“Lincoln Police Department takes all acts of violence extremely seriously and is committed to ensuring that all cases are thoroughly investigated,” the spokeswoman said in a statement.

Anyone with information should call LPD at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
