Police say scammers are using accident reports to target victims

Lincoln police are warning citizens about a new scam using the police department’s own accident reports.

Lincoln Police officer Angela Sands said a 27-year-old woman lost $80 after a man called her and said he was a federal investigator and used the name of a Lincoln police officer.

Sands said the man told her she owed him $974 for a car crash she was involved in. She said the woman believed him because he had detailed information about the crash. She sent the man $80 on a prepaid credit card.

Police said they told the victim accident reports are public, and it’s likely this scammer is using those reports to find victims.

Sand said the police department will never call you asking for money, and if you receive a call like this to report it to the police and the Attorney General’s Office.
