Postal service urges customers to clear walkways and sidewalks

With snow and ice covering the ground–the Postal service is asking Lincoln residents to clear their walkways and sidewalks for carriers.
The postal service said, several workers have suffered serious injuries related to slips, trips and falls due to icy and snow covered walkways and porch steps.
Letter carriers have been instructed to use good judgment, if it looks hazardous, they could withhold your mail.
Officials said, it’s not to inconvenience the customer, but for their workers safety.
Here’s what they suggest:
-Clear enough snow from curbside boxes to allow mail trucks to approach the box, deliver the mail and to drive away from the box without danger and allow enough space to backup.
-Walkways should be cleared of snow and ice and allow enough traction to avoid slips, trips and falls.
-Steps should also be kept clear of ice and snow and in good repair so as not to cause injury to the letter carriers.
-Overhangs should be clear and free of snow and ice to avoid injury.
