Pound Middle School displays 7th grade science projects

Award winning displays were at Pound Middle School this afternoon. Hard work and teamwork made this event possible. It was originally scheduled for earlier this year but was called off because of a snow storm.

All 7th graders worked in groups to showcase their National Geographic GeoChallenge: Tackling Plastic Projects.

Students worked through the fall semester on science projects where they then competed at a national competition in February.

Of the 45 teams that competed from Pound, 11 qualified. Two of those teams earned second and third places.

Students created maps of their source to sea locations, wrote a GeoChallenge brief identifying their chosen problem and solution, worked on designing and creating solutions to the plastic problem, and created a video explaining their solution.

7th Grade teacher Kirsten Smith was proud and excited to see what the students achieved. She and Anica Brown, another teacher at Pound, led the project and helped students along the way.

“It was incredible to see what they wanted to share and what they have done. A lot of them had contacted people in the community or beyond to find out about the issue or let them know about the problem. And so it was exciting to see them take the leadership and being excited to solving the issue also,” Smith said.

Parents and faculty walked around the media center Tuesday night as students talked about their project’s and how they brought their ideas to fruition.
