Powerful storm set to bring blizzard, severe weather to Nebraska Wednesday and Thursday

Another powerful storm system has taken aim on Nebraska and is set to bring blizzard conditions and severe weather throughout the state Wednesday through Thursday.

Western and central Nebraska are expected to take the brunt of the storm as snow amounts up to two feet are possible. Potential wind gusts upwards of 60 miles per hour will likely create whiteout conditions making travel dangerous to impossible. Blizzard warnings are in effect for much of the western half of the state.

A heavy, wet snow is expected which could cause power outages in portions of the Sand Hills. Ice accumulations up to 0.15″ are also possible for those same regions.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation urges against travel in blizzard-warned areas. If travel is absolutely necessary, they say to drive with extreme caution. Road crews will be out to treat and clear the roads. Drivers can visit 511.nebraska.gov, download the Nebraska 511 mobile app, or dial 511 for the latest information on road conditions and closures.

Rain will be the primary precipitation type for east Nebraska, including Lincoln. There is a slight risk for severe weather tomorrow evening in the southeast corner, with hail and gusty winds being the largest threat. Rain will eventually transition to snow late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, but generally less than an inch of snow is expected for the Lincoln region.
