Precision machinery class helps Lincoln special ed students build a future
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Special education students in Lincoln are learning to operate precision machinery — and they are absolutely loving it.
Independence Academy strives to give students with disabilities educational, life, social and career experiences in business or agency settings.
This semester, some students are working with milling machines at Southeast Community College that engrave and shape metal into a variety of things.
“It is actually very hard to begin with,” participant Weston Elrod said. “But also, once I figure something out, it’s just so amazing.”
Throughout the semester, they’ve made tools such as hammers. On Tuesday, they were making custom dice.
This is the first time the course has been offered for special education students.
