Preseason AP Poll set; Nebraska football left out but receives votes
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The 2025 college football preseason AP Poll was released Monday morning, creating plenty of storylines to start the season.
Texas claimed the No. 1 spot with 1,552 total points and 25 first-place votes. This marks the first time that the Longhorns have taken the No. 1 spot in the preseason poll.
No. 2 Penn State came in right behind them with 1,547 points and 23 first-place votes.
This was the closest preseason vote between the top two teams since 1998.
Defending national champion Ohio State came in at No. 3 with 1,472 points and 11 first-place votes.
The Buckeyes and the Longhorns are slotted to meet in week one of the college football season.

The Southeastern Conference had the most teams land in the top 25 with 10: No. 1 Texas (1,552 points), No. 5 Georgia (1,331), No. 8 Alabama (1,179), No. 9 LSU (1,174), No. 13 South Carolina (667), No. 15 Florida (626), No. 18 Oklahoma (463), No. 19 Texas A&M (434), No. 21 Ole Miss (370) and No. 24 Tennessee (192).
Missouri (33 points) and Auburn (10) also received votes to be in the rankings.
The Big Ten has six teams in the top 25: No. 2 Penn State (1,547), No. 3 Ohio State (1,472), No. 7 Oregon (1,236), No. 12 Illinois (713), No. 14 Michigan (662) and No. 20 Indiana (423).
USC (64), Nebraska (23) and Iowa (5) also received votes.

The Huskers were last ranked in 2024 when they reached as high as No. 22 in the national rankings.
Nebraska dropped out of the AP Poll following an overtime loss to Illinois.
