President Hank Bounds unveils a new budget proposal

On Friday afternoon, a proposed budget for the University of Nebraska was unveiled.
“It’s a good budget that we are putting forward it gives us the opportunity to continue the path of success that we’ve been on,” Hank Bounds University of Nebraska President said.
Over the last few years the university system has had to cut spending, but a couple of months ago the state legislature approved a budget increase for the University of Nebraska.
Employees will now be seeing a 2% increase, but to offset those costs tuition costs are increasing for students by 2.75%, and some students we talked to are not happy.
“They’re outrageous, to be honest I mean I’m a 19 year broke person so you know college is an important part of what I want to go into, I want to be a nurse practitioner so there’s no way I can’t go to college it’s absolutely necessary but I’m having to transfer schools because UNL’s become too expensive for me and my family situation so it’s just crazy how much it costs,” Taylor Yaussi a Sophomore at UNL said.
But when you compare tuition costs across the country the University of Nebraska is still on the lower half even with the recent increase.
“This budget allows us to keep tuition really affordable so when you talk about big ten institutions and you think about UNL’s tuition as opposed to the rest of the big ten we are so much more affordable than every other institution and I’m really excited to be able to say that,” Bounds said.
While some worry with higher tuition costs we could see the number of students going down, most are still not worried about the future of Nebraska schools.
“I feel like there’s still going to be a lot of people who come to the University of Nebraska because it’s just such a big college and there’s a lot of history here so I don’t think it’s going to affect enrollment that much but it’s definitely going to affect debt after college is over,” Holden Cave UNL sophomore said.
This proposed budget is now headed to the board of regents where they will review it in the next coming weeks.
