Rain first, changeover to mix/snow possible in southeast Nebraska

Thursday will bring a lot more moisture across Nebraska than we’ve seen in some time.

This moisture will come in the form of a wintry mix, with snow and rain starting out in western Nebraska first.

For us in southeast Nebraska, we’ll see rain and then a changeover to some light snow into Friday morning.

The better chance for steady rain comes late in the afternoon and especially evening on Thursday. Pack the rain gear for later!

Most of the precipitation will fall as a wintry mix/freezing rain before a transition to snow for western and southwestern Nebraska into Thursday afternoon and evening.

For southeast Nebraska, we’ll see rain increase in coverage by the evening.

As the cold front slowly makes its way south and east, cold air will cut in from the back side and work to transition rainfall to light snowfall into early Friday.

As of Thursday morning, a Winter Storm Warning was issued for portions of western Nebraska forecasting a mixed precipitation before a transition to heavier snow.

Winter Weather Advisory surrounds that area for mixed precipitation and lighter total snow through early Friday.

Heavier snow is expected west of North Platte through Friday, with less than an inch expected over eastern Nebraska.

The better chance for snow overall is through the southern half of the state, increasing as you go west.

For Lincoln, this will be our first measurable amount of precipitation (other than a trace or a hundredth of an inch here and there) since early February!

This is welcome moisture for most, with the liquid equivalent of what’s possible (both rain and snow) shown below.

This will wrap up in southeast Nebraska through Friday morning, ending by the early afternoon.

We’ll be left cooler for a day in the 40s before we’re on our way back to the lower 70s early next week.
