Rain potential with last cooler day; heat spikes late this weekend
Foggy start to Friday so far.
A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for a large area of central and eastern Nebraska until 10 a.m. Friday morning.
After the fog clears, still a lot of clouds in this cooler forecast for Friday. Winds will be rather light with a muggy feel again.
High temperatures will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
But it’ll feel a lot warmer.
Rain potential increases throughout the afternoon hours toward the early evening. A few showers will be possible in the vicinity of Lincoln, while most of the rain and thunderstorms will track east and southeast from Lincoln through today and tonight.
Up to ~1″ of rainfall is possible for those closer to Kansas and Missouri.
Model rainfall has actually slipped recently, so the confidence in a flood threat is also dropping on the Nebraska side. Word from the National Weather Service is that we may see the Flood Watch in place (below) get cancelled later.
Today also marks the 89th anniversary since Lincoln’s hottest day on record (July 15, 1936).
The LOW temperature that day was in the 90s, and the high temperature reached 115. This famous picture is of many Lincolnites choosing to sleep on the lawn of the Capitol instead of their hot homes.
After another morning of fog for Saturday, we’ll clear out for more weekend sun and higher temperatures. Especially Sunday into next Monday, high temperatures are forecast to peak in the middle and upper 90s.
The heat index will already start to feel hot and heavy on Saturday in the upper 90s.
But the heat index will likely be closer to 110° on Sunday, so anticipate heat headlines will be issued. And likely again on Monday.
