Flooding causes evacuations in Platte Center; rainfall tops 5 inches in some spots

LINCOLN, Neb. — Some residents of Platte Center were evacuating Thursday night as floodwaters rose.

An alert on the village’s website said residents south of Fourth Street could take shelter at the St. Joseph Catholic Church hall.

Earlier in the evening, the city warned of “possible flooding,” saying on its website, “Creek is full.”

Elm Creek runs through Platte Center before emptying into Shell Creek.

Platte Center Fire & Rescue was filling sandbags as the water rose, according to Platte County Emergency Management.

Heavy rainfall was reported in other Platte County communities, including 7.5 inches in Lindsay and 5.5 inches in Tarnov, according to Chief Meteorologist John Dissauer.

Platte Center is about 12 miles northwest of Columbus.
