Raise your steins: Bockfest planned for Saturday in downtown Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Bierhaus Maisschäler is taking advantage of above-zero temperatures with a winter beer festival on Saturday.

Bockfest celebrates Bavarian culture and ushers in the beginning of spring, much like Oktoberfest in the fall.

“Last year we had about 2,000 people show up to this event, so we’re anticipating about the same,” Bierhaus owner Cody Schmick said.

Eighth Street will be closed from O to P streets from Friday through Sunday for this event.

The outdoor event runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, hosting a variety of activities and vendors to enjoy.

After 6 p.m., the festivities will move inside.

Here are some of the activities that will be taking place:

  • Hammerschlogen: A race to drive nails into a wooden block with a hammer
  • Stein holding: A strength contest in which competitors hold a full 1-liter beer stein for as long as possible
  • Shotski: A ski with shot glasses attached, allowing multiple people to drink at the same time
  • Beer poking: Heating a metal poker in a fire and then plunging it into a glass of beer. The heat caramelizes the malt sugars in the beer, creating a frothy, sweet flavor.
  • Live polka music: Bands include Polka Police and the Barry Boyce Band.
  • Bavarian food such as brats, soft pretzels and more

Admission will cost $10, and of course, you’ll need to pay for food and drinks.
