Rally gathers at state capitol as Let Them Grow Act goes into effect for Nebraska
Lincoln, Neb. (KLKN) – On the steps of the capitol, dozens of transgender individuals and allies gathered as LB 574 went into effect on Sunday.
The bill, also known as the Let Them Grow Act, was passed earlier this year. It prohibits the performance of gender-affirming surgeries on individuals under the age of 19.
The law also includes temporary regulations that cover other forms of gender-affirming care as well.
Individuals under 19 will need to receive a minimum of 40 gender-identity focused therapy hours, as well as a minimum waiting period of seven days between the time a doctor received consent and the beginning of treatment.
Those who attended Sunday’s rally showed support for the transgender community, who are directly affected by the bill.
“We support each other, we’re here for each other,” said Tory Hall, who attended the rally. “Just because this issue doesn’t pertain to me directly doesn’t mean I don’t passionately love you and care about you and want you to live your best life.”
Event organizers are looking ahead at what can be done moving forward.
“We can continue to be in contact with our state senators about the importance of being inclusive in our legislation,” said Abbi Swatsworth, the executive director of OutNebraska. “Trans folks live all over Nebraska and we deserve to belong here.”
There will be an open hearing for the public on Nov. 28th from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Members of the public will be able to make comments at that time on proposed final regulations.
