Record-breaking heat possible; hot days this weekend

September’s full moon officially became “full” around 5 a.m. on Friday morning. This month’s full moon is known as the Harvest moon, and it will be the last supermoon of the year. It will also appear to be full by Friday night into the wee hours of Saturday as well, so don’t miss out!

Full Moon Forecast

Very isolated storms were seen early on Friday, with more isolated chances in northeast Nebraska by Friday afternoon and evening. A weak surface boundary will be closing in on that area of Nebraska, and there’s a Marginal risk for these storms to be severe.

There’s an ever so small chance to see some isolated storms Saturday morning too, mostly south of I-80, closer to Kearney or Hastings. That possibility has really fizzled though, with latest model runs. Lincoln is expected to be dry through the weekend.

By Tuesday, a strong front will be enough to fire more widespread thunderstorms first, then much cooler air behind it.

Precip Chances

Until then, we’ll be very hot for this time of the year. We saw lower 90s on Thursday in Lincoln. But through Friday and Saturday, it’ll be a few degrees warmer. Especially on Friday, we’ve got a great chance at breaking record highs for the date – September 29th.

Record Friday

We’ll come close again to records on Saturday and Sunday, too. Temperatures expected to stay in the 90s through this weekend. These hot conditions paired with gusty winds will pose a higher risk for fire danger through this period.

Record High 4 Day

With that being said, that means this home Husker football game will be a hot and sweaty one. There’ll be a good wind out of the south, gusting upwards of 25-30 mph throughout the day.

Home Afternoon Game 3 Panel

The strongest winds are expected Friday afternoon, with southerly winds forecasted through the beginning of next week. By Tuesday, those winds will start out of the south, then shift to be out of the west and northwest to bring in cooler air and 70s by Wednesday.

Wind Gusts Next 5 Days

October will start hot, but it will be cooler by the first full weekend of the month. Looking forward to 70s coming back to the forecast soon enough!
