Record levels of snow have caused headaches for Nebraskans, but spring could be on its way

Throughout Nebraska this winter we have experienced near record high snow total amounts.

With this type of winter, a lot of different parts of the state are dealing with low land flooding.

“If you have ice or accumulations of ice in those low lying across or in those streams then you add the runoff component with rain on top of snow if tends to collect there and simply this time of the year we are prone to that especially because our ground is frozen,” Al Dutcher Associate State Climatologist

Also with this much accumulation of ice and snow, and no warm temperatures to melt it, Nebraskans are beginning to see more ice jams causing major issues.

With all of the snow and ice still on the ground, it has also caused quite the headache for a lot of Nebraska farmers.

But experts say if the weather would change just slightly in the upcoming weeks everything could start looking upwards for farmers.

“So two weeks of dry weather would go a long way to alleviate everyone’s concern but as this window narrows and those days get shorter and shorter between now and when we want to get out on the field the concern is going to start to increase rather dramatically,” Dutcher said.

They also say don’t worry because spring could be just around the corner.

“We are really close and it will happen and it will catch us by surprise,” Dutcher added.
