Renters urged to know their rights as evictions rise in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Evictions are rising across Nebraska, and experts worry that many renters don’t know their rights.

There were almost 1,400 more evictions in the first half of this year than the same period in 2022.

This comes as many Nebraskans are struggling to afford high rents.

Nebraskans are spending 30% to 50% of their income on rent alone, according to a Harvard study.

Scott Mertz with Legal Aid of Nebraska said people experiencing financial difficulties typically qualify for their services, which could protect them from losing their home.

Mertz said renters facing evictions need to know their rights. He said they have the right to a court hearing and a notice of at least seven days before eviction.

“‘If it’s a non-payment issue, at a minimum, a tenant is entitled a written notice that affords them seven days to cure — that is, pay — the money owed,” Mertz said. “They got to have that in writing, indicating what the amount is and afford them those seven days.”

Experts at Legal Aid also warn that an eviction stays on your record for decades.

They said it can seriously hurt future rental applications, your job and your health.
