Residents celebrate the Gage County Fair

A big crowd took part in a fun filled day at the Gage County Fair in Beatrice.
Festivities started on Tuesday and continued Saturday with kids from 4-H and the FFA showcasing their animals.
Over a thousand came out to compete in the fair. Organizers say the fair showcases the importance of agriculture.
“The realistic part of it, is the county has always been apart of agriculture and this is truly an agricultural fair and we have a strong 4-H base,” said Lisa Wiegand with the Gage County Fair. “We have a strong support from our community at Gage County and surrounding communities. That’s what makes our fair.”
Children from 4-H and the FFA gathered to show their pigs, sheeps, cows, and ducks. David McCown, a 4H competitor, entered his jumbo peaking duck this year.
“This is my first jumbo peaking so all my others one are a lot smaller and skinnier,” said David.
The decision to participate in 4-H was one that was passed down as a family tradition for David.
“My dad showed chicken, goats, and sheep when he was younger; and my mom owned chickens when she was younger, so pretty much just my parents,” said David.
Although he said his duck tends to take care of himself hygiene-wise, David said making sure the animal is fed and his pool is clean has taught him something he will never forget.
“It makes you more responsible,” said David. “I’ve learned that. A lot more responsible”
The Gage County Fair will continue through Sunday July 28th starting at 2:00 p.m. Some of the activities included an Ag-appreciation barbeque, live music, fair rides, and the fan favorite “Eve of Destruction.”
With an event packed week, Lisa Wiegland says she starts preparing very early every year and tries to incorporate everything the community asks for.
“We already start planning for next year so we have the opportunity to critique what we’re doing,” said Lisa. “What works, what doesn’t work; then we go to the drawing board and ask the community what they liked to see.”
