Return to winter; Cold air remains in place
A cold front passed through southeast Nebraska Monday. Temperatures were as much as 52° colder than 24-hours previously at times Monday afternoon. Winds will gust over 30 mph in to Tuesday morning sending wind chill values to the lowest levels of 2022.
Skies will remain cloudy tonight. High pressure will move south in to the northern U.S. sending Arctic air down through the Plains. Temperatures will drop to a few degrees below zero to near 10° Tuesday morning. The previously mentioned winds will create wind chill values as low as -30° in some locales. I am expecting wind chills to get as low as -15° to -6° in Lincoln Tuesday morning.
We will not warm much through the day Tuesday. Computer models suggest a low level of clouds will remain in place a few thousand feet above the ground. This will help keep temperatures cold. Highs will be in the teens. Winds will gust to 30 mph throughout the day generating wind chills around 0°.
Another cold night is coming for Wednesday morning. Lows will likely below zero for sunrise Wednesday. Winds will gust to 25 mph out of the north creating wind chills -25° to -15°.
Temperatures will struggle to get out of the teens through Thursday. Thursday also brings a developing weather system to the Plains. Nebraska will remain on the northern side of the storm. The snow side. While precipitation amounts look relatively light at this time, some accumulation is possible. At this time it does not to be a significant snow. Stay tuned!
