Ricketts signs bill on lake between Omaha and Lincoln, other water projects
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Gov. Pete Ricketts on Monday signed LB 1023, a bill that would enhance Lake McConaughy, Niobrara State Park and Lewis and Clark Lake, as well as build a new lake between Omaha and Lincoln.
Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers hopes that the projects will enhance Nebraskans’ lives for generations.
“I think it’ll add immeasurably to the quality of life for Nebraskans, and not to mention include improving our economic opportunities,” he said.
The proposed lake between Omaha and Lincoln still needs to be researched and surveyed.
The bill sets aside $20 million to study if the lake is feasible and another $26 million to build the lake.
The hope is that people would willingly give their land for this project.
Hilgers wouldn’t say with 100% certainty whether the state would or wouldn’t use eminent domain.
