‘Right away you’re saving’: Lincoln thrift store sees increase in shoppers as Halloween nears

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The aisles at St. Louise Gift & Thrift Store are crowded, and with Halloween approaching fast, costumes are a hot commodity.

“Seasonal typically brings more people in the door as the year changes, whether it be for Halloween, or it’s getting cold, we’ve got coats out on the racks,” said Jamie Carson, Director of Sustainability for Catholic Social Services.

Carson said they’ve seen more and more families choosing secondhand shopping this holiday season.

And with a wide selection, it’s a fun way to mix-and-match items for spooky looks that don’t scare shoppers’ wallets.

“I would say year over year, our statistics are increasing, especially in the item sales,” Carson said. “From retail prices, it’s about 50-80% less cost to shop at thrift. So right away you’re saving. But really, I think the most fun part is you can be creative.”

She said they’ve even seen a line forming outside the doors before they open.

And once Halloween wraps up, Christmas takes center stage.

Carson said the store’s used decor — from trees to ornaments — is another big hit.

But the most significant benefit from the increase in shoppers is the extra proceeds that go back into supporting those in need.

“The profit goes back into helping the community in many different ways depending on the agency,” she said. “Here at Catholic Social Services, the profits that we generate from our thrift, ecommerce and recycling operations out at our new donation center go back into helping our clients.”
