Root family says Tibbetts’ story reminds them of their own

Mollie Tibbetts’ family is certainly grieving at this time.

And their story echoes what another family went through just a couple years ago.

Michelle Root’s daughter Sarah was killed in a car crash in Omaha in January of 2016, when an undocumented immigrant hit her.

The other driver, Eswin Mejia, disappeared after posting bond.

In response, Iowa and Nebraska congressional lawmakers sponsored "Sarah’s Law," which would allow the federal government to take custody of anyone in the country illegally who is accused of causing a deadly crime

But that bill remains stalled on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s desk.

Michelle hopes the Tibbetts case will get the bill the attention it deserves.

"We make calls and try to bring it to the floor of the senate with no luck," Michelle said.  "But maybe now something will be done."

On Tuesday, Mollie’s body was found in a cornfield and authorities said an undocumented immigrant has admitted to killing her.

Sarah’s father Scott Root hopes justice is served for the Tibbetts family, something he said he was cheated out of in Sarah’s case.
