Run 2 Overcome

Through the rain and the cold, the Run 2 Overcome had a record amount of people spreading awareness to prevent suicide.

This is the 8th year the event has been going on.

“This is such a blessing it’s hard even not to get choked up when I wake up on race day. We have over 75 close to 100 volunteers that make this happen,” says Amy Olsen the event organizer.

Amy Olsen who’s brother Adam committed suicide has been organizing the Run 2 Overcome all 8 years.

She says the support they get every year is overwhelming.

“It means a lot to myself and to our family after losing our brother, song, friend and uncle in 2010 and this is our vision we wanted to give back through our pain,” added Amy Olsen.

Then for a lot of participants like Maggi Thorn, an American Ninja Warrior, bringing awareness to suicide prevention here in Lincoln, is what doing an event like this is what it’s all about.

“Run 2 overcome is something that I look forward to every year on my calendar it’s a huge mission just to be able to raise awareness for suicide my brother committed suicide, my best friend did it’s something I wrestled with early in college,” says Maggi Thorn.

With the Run 2 Overcome though the hope is that this event can bring friends and family together who are going through the pain of losing a loved one.

“I think the biggest takeaway from the Run 2 Overcome is to show, hey you know what we’re out here erasing the stigma. The thing is people struggle and if we can come together as a community together and support one another that’s the biggest thing we can do. Run 2 Overcome, their so solidified their here for people and when you come to know you’re a part of that,” added Maggi Thron.
