Ryan Kearney stepping down as Lincoln Pius X football coach

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln Pius X High School on Friday announced that Head Football Coach Ryan Kearney will step down as head football coach.
Instead, Kearney will take on a new role as the school’s Youth Athletics Outreach Coordinator.
In addition to these new responsibilities, Kearney will continue teaching at Pius X, “bringing his dedication, energy, and mentorship to both the classroom and the athletic programs.”
The school said it looks forward to his continued impact on students’ academic and athletic success for years to come.
Kearney started coaching at Pius X in 2003 and has served as head coach since 2016.
During his tenure, he led the Thunderbolts to the playoffs eight times.
The school said the program has developed both on and off the field under his direction, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and character that has left a lasting impact on countless student-athletes.
In his new role as Youth Athletics Outreach Coordinator, Kearney will oversee and expand youth athletic programming for future Thunderbolts, strengthening relationships with local parishes, grade schools, and families.
He will also serve as a liaison between Pius X High School and the Jr. Bolts Program, ensuring strong communication, alignment of goals, and a shared commitment to promoting skill development, sportsmanship, and faith-based community engagement among young athletes.
“I have been fortunate to serve the Pius X community for the past 22 years in my role as a teacher and coach, and value the relationships built with students, athletes, families, and coaches,” Kearney said in a press release.” I am excited to take those relationships, lessons, and growth forward as I continue to teach and step into a new role as Youth Sports Outreach Coordinator at Pius X. My family and I are excited about this new opportunity to have a great impact on both Pius X and the greater Catholic community in Lincoln.”
“I want to thank Ryan for the hard work and dedication he has given to Pius X and our football program,” Athletic Director Trevor Johnson said. “I look forward to working with Ryan in his new role as we continue to expand youth programs for our future Bolts and develop the future of Pius X Athletics. These programs have grown rapidly, and having Ryan in place to provide steady leadership helps ensure the success of our youth programs.”
“I am so appreciative of Ryan’s tremendous work here at Pius and the commitment he has shown to our storied football program,” Chief Administrative Officer Jeremy Ekeler said. “Ryan is a ‘Pius guy’ through and through, and he has already touched many lives in his career. I’m excited about the leadership opportunities ahead for him, which will continue to benefit our Thunderbolt community.”
The school will begin identifying the next head football coach in the coming weeks.
