Salvation Army of Lincoln prepares for holidays with Thanksgiving meal boxes
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Salvation Army of Lincoln is preparing to see an increase in families served this holiday season.
On Monday, the nonprofit started taking applications for Thanksgiving meal boxes, which include turkey or ham and canned goods.
The Salvation Army is looking for monetary donations or canned goods to fill the meal boxes.
The nonprofit is also hosting a Turkey-a-Thon event on Nov. 3 at the Hy-Vee stores near 40th Street and Old Cheney Road and 70th Street and Pioneers Road.
Capt. Kelsie Moreno. the Salvation Army’s corps officer, said the nonprofit wants to make sure families can celebrate the holidays despite their circumstances.
Moreno said 520 families were served on Thanksgiving last year, and the nonprofit is expecting to help over 600 this year.
“When they are struggling to put groceries on the table all year long, they don’t want to have to be put in a position to sacrifice that Thanksgiving tradition,” Moreno said.
