Sam Griesel hosts inaugural Sammy Hoops basketball camp

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Former Nebraska basketball guard Sam Griesel has been all over the country since his time in a Husker uniform came to an end.

From an NBA Summer League invite with the Boston Celtics to playing in the NBA 2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas.

Now, the hometown hero is taking some time to give back to the next generation of hoopers through his inaugural Sammy Hoops summer camp.

“My summer has been so crazy and hectic, and I’ve been all over the country starting in April, really, so now felt like the only time that we really could do it,” Griesel said.

It’s a two-day event in collaboration with Griesel’s trainer, Thomas Viglianco, held at Grand Island Northwest High School.

Griesel said it gives kids a chance to have fun, develop skills and enjoy playing ball together.

He hopes it will become an annual event.

He also shared his thoughts on his time with the Celtics.

“The experience as a whole was incredible,” Griesel said. “I was super grateful for everything and got some good feedback from Boston. So hopefully, that’s not my only shot, you know, at the NBA.”

On Tuesday, Griesel confirmed that he signed a contract with the professional German team Telekom Baskets Bonn, the defending BCL champions.

“I’m super excited about that, but I just want to take it day by day, right now, with how my life has gone this last year.” Griesel said. “Just live in the moment and cherish little things and get to do things like this, like impacting the youth. I think that’s where my heart truly is. And that’s why I’m so grateful to have the platform to be able to give back to the community that supports me so well.”
