LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A scammer posing as a federal agent defrauded a Lincoln woman of over $4,000, police said Friday.

The scam began on July 17 after a 23-year-old woman received an email saying she had bought an iPhone.

Police said the victim called the number in the email and told them she did not buy the phone.  The person told her that her identity was stolen.

Shortly after, she was transferred to a person posing as a “CIA agent.”  They told the victim to withdraw $3,600, according to police.

On July 18, she was told to use that money to buy Walmart cash cards and send photos and receipts.

The scammers told her to send another $500 cash card the next day.  Police said the total loss is $4,100.

Police reminded people that “no government agency will demand money over the phone or via gift cards.”
