Scammer posing as Geek Squad technician stole $29,000 from Lincoln woman

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A 73-year-old Lincoln woman lost nearly $30,000 Thursday in a bitcoin scam, police say.

The victim got a notification on her computer saying it wasn’t working properly.  A phone number was also provided.

She called and spoke with a man, who claimed to be a part of Best Buy’s Geek Squad, according to police.

The man was given access to the victim’s computer, police said.  He told the victim he accidentally gave her $25,000 for fixing her computer.

Police said the victim was told to withdraw $29,000 and deposit it into a bitcoin ATM.

Bitcoin customer service was contacted but was unable to reverse the transaction, according to police.

Police said there has been an uptick in fraud cases, including some targeting the elderly.

“When in doubt, just hang up,” police said in a press release.
