Scattered showers early; severe threat Thursday evening and overnight
Cloud cover will limit the heating we see throughout today. Temperatures are only expected to top out in the lower 80s, with spot showers possible more so by this afternoon.
Early morning rain has struggled to move into southeast Nebraska and we initially won’t see much besides a stray sprinkle or two. Better chances to come overnight.
Storms look to fire in western Nebraska Thursday evening, with higher confidence in the severe potential with these storms in their early stages. Overall, storms should be of the weaker variety as that wave moves into southeast Nebraska overnight. There’s potential to see a strong to severe storm or two with the main threats being large hail and damaging wind.
But an Enhanced (Level 3 of 5) risk highlights that area out west in which more persistent (some possibly intense) severe storms will be possible at first. A Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk covers just about the rest of Nebraska, with storms again expected to be more scattered, losing strength throughout the night.
A couple of tornadoes could be seen from these storms by tonight.
Large hail could be up to 2″ + in diameter especially in the area with black hash marks.
The potential for damaging wind is also high with gusts exceeding 75 mph possible out west.
Other days to keep an eye on with potential for severe weather will be again on Friday (playing off Thursday’s round) and Monday.
