Scattered snow showers possible by Tuesday evening

It’s no surprise that the entire state of Nebraska has seen less snow than usual so far this winter. We aren’t far into the season. For many of us, the inches of snow we are running below normal (as seen below) could be made up in a storm or two.

Snow Departures

We just have yet to see a winter storm to bring any accumulating snow, especially in Lincoln.

One streak we’ve been closely watching is how many days we’ve been without measurable snow. Measurable snow means a tenth of an inch or more.

This streak is the longest in history because of how early the snow season ended early this year.

Snowless Streak

It’s unlikely that we will end that streak today, but there’s a chance for scattered snow showers by Tuesday evening and night.

Meanwhile, temperatures continue to get colder. Statewide highs will be in the 30s and 40s today.

Stormcast State Temp

With a bit of a northwest breeze, wind chills throughout the day won’t feel all that great.

But as for the timing of snow later on, the Stormcast video below shows that potential starting up by the late afternoon north of I-80. If you manage to get caught under these, a quick reduction in visibility is possible – with some quick accumulations on the roads possible as well.

Minor accumulations are in the forecast more so toward Omaha and northern Nebraska through early Wednesday morning.

These quick-movers are riding in on another front that will quickly drop temperatures below freezing again overnight and morning temperatures to the teens. Some flash freezing on elevated surfaces and roadways caught in any snowfall later tonight could happen.

Wind gusts will also increase overnight behind this front, with gusts around 30 mph possible.

This front is just another in a series we see throughout the week, working in colder air from the north. The coldest temperatures this week are still set to arrive on Thursday.
