Principal Devney greeted each student at Huntington Elementary school in North Lincoln with a handshake as they started the first day of school.

For him and fellow teachers this is a day they’ve been looking forward to all summer.

"Welcoming kids, seeing the smiles, getting the hugs, the energy that’s in the school, this is the best right here of the morning," said Principal Devney.

Not everyone was as thrilled about being back as Principal Devney.

There were a few tears from kids who weren’t quite ready to leave mom and dad to head into school, but a therapy dog offered comfort, and a few kisses, while walking them to their classes, making goodbye a little easier.

For some students, like Clarence Darryl Stewart’s grand kids, emotions were split about going back to school, "Lee–lee was excited, she was pumped up for today she was all ready for it. Monte was slowly getting ready for it, but when last night rolled around he was like oh tomorrow the first day of school, both of them tomorrow is the first day of school, we’re ready."

Ready or not, the new school is here and with that comes new goals and the hopes for the best year yet.

"My hopes for the school year is kids enjoy school, they’re engaged, they have fun, they see school as a safe place, a welcoming place, and they’re excited to be here each and every day, that’s my goal for the year," said Principal Devney.
