Scott Frost to be paid $15 million in severance from Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – By firing Frost on Sunday, Nebraska is required to pay him a $15 million buyout.

That number would have been cut by 50% to $7.5 million had Nebraska waited to fire Frost until Oct. 1. But Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts opted to make the change ahead of a huge challenge against Oklahoma on Saturday.

Alberts says his reason for acting quickly is the players. He felt “we owed it to them to give them a different voice.”

“We needed to do something,” Alberts said. “We needed to inject something into this team to give them the confidence and hopefully help them compete. Nothing would please me more than to see a pretty significant change and help this team get over the hump and win some games.”

Money clearly isn’t an issue for the university, which has spent nearly $28 million paying off football and men’s basketball coaches since 2005.

That includes buyouts to football’s Bill Callahan ($3.1 million), Bo Pelini ($6.5 million) and Mike Riley ($6.2 million) along with basketball’s Doc Sadler and Tim Miles.
