Nebraska teen found safe after going missing for two days, authorities say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – UPDATE: The teen who went missing in Holt County on Wednesday has been found safe.

The Holt County Sheriff’s Office is now saying it appears that Shyla left of her own free will and has been entered into the national database as a runaway juvenile.

It says authorities were called to Morgan Sterns’ home in Chambers on Wednesday around 9:15 p.m.

Sterns told them his daughter Shyla went out to feed the chickens and never returned.

The Holt County Sheriff’s Office, Chambers Fire and Rescue, and the Nebraska State Patrol all took part in a sweeping search of the area.

Thermal imaging devices were used as they checked buildings, homes of friends and relatives, and surrounding county roads.

People in the community and from other towns also joined in the search.

Investigators eventually learned Shyla took off with a blue backpack, a black blanket, clothes and prescribed medication.

She was wearing black and blue shorts, a gray hooded sweatshirt and orange flip-flops.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Family, parishioners and authorities are asking people to be on the lookout for a missing Nebraska teen.

According to a post by Chambers Church, 13-year-old Shyla Sterns disappeared in the Holt County village on Wednesday. It says she was last seen around 9 p.m.

The Boyd County Sheriff’s Office then shared a post by Ron Sterns, who said the whole community has been picked apart.

He’s asking everyone to share photos of his niece and look at any surveillance video you have.

Ron also requests everyone to check their campers, unoccupied buildings and hazardous areas around the village.

That includes uncapped wells, old treehouses in the woods and abandoned barns.  Ron fears she could be injured or trapped.

The Nebraska State Patrol’s missing persons database has an alternate spelling of the girl’s name.

It also says she has officially been missing since Thursday.  She’s described at 5-foot-5 and 180 pounds with purple hair.

Anyone with information or who sees her is urged to call the Holt County Sheriff’s Office at 402-336-2546.
